Preparing This Advent Season - Dec. 7

Week of December 7

Learn

December 8th is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, where we give thanks to God for the great gift of Mary, who was created completely full of God's life and love and always said 'Yes' to Him! Check out this video where Marc reflects a bit on why the Immaculate Conception is such a big deal and what it means for us as Christians in the 21st century.

 Pray

The second week of Advent is a wonderful time to reflect on Jesus' Mother, Mary, as we continue to prepare for the celebration of our Savior being born to us on Christmas Day.  Mary is given great honor because it was her 'yes' that made way for God taking on human flesh in the person of Jesus Christ and entering our world.  See below three ways that you and your family can honor the Mother of God this week.
  • Attend Mass on Tuesday, December 8, a Holy Day of Obligation, in celebration of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.  This feast reminds us that Mary was created without Original Sin in preparation for becoming the Mother of our Savior, Jesus.  Jesus entered the world through a pure vessel.
  • Pray the Joyful Mysteries of the rosary with your family reflecting on the happy times in Mary's life.  There is a great explanation on how to pray the rosary at this website.  The website includes a short description of each of the Joyful Mysteries and links that have the words for each of the prayers.
  • Do you and yours enjoy hands-on activities?  Check out the PDF titled "Mary the Mother of Jesus" that will guide you through the making of a prayer card with prayers to Mary and a poster with ways we can say "Yes" to God during the season of Advent.

Giving gifts at Christmastime is a tradition rooted in the fact that God has given us the greatest gift of all in the Person of Jesus - His very self! Why not spend some time this week cleaning out your house of old toys, clothes, and other items that you can share with others by donating them to St. Vincent de Paul or some other local charity?
