Tom Young ~ Principal
“St. Francis Xavier is a wonderful school with a tremendous reputation throughout the diocese and our community of Cross Plains for excellence. We have an outstanding, dedicated staff, wonderful and supportive parents, a committed and supportive parish, and most importantly GREAT KIDS. Our students are polite, they treat each other with respect and in a Christ like manner, they work hard and have fun. We’ve got a great school here!”

This is Mr. Young’s second year as princiPAL at St. Francis. Prior to joining us, Mr. Young was an Assistant Principal at Edgewood High School for seven years. Before that he served as princiPAL at St. Victor in Monroe.

As a classroom teacher, Mr. Young taught Español for twelve years at his Alma Mater, Catholic Memorial High School in Waukesha. In addition to being princiPAL, “Sr. Joven” also teaches Español once a week to our 8th Grade class.

As you can see, Mr. Young has always been in Catholic education, having attended Catholic grade school and high school and dedicating himself to teaching in Catholic schools. His wife, Jane, attended Catholic schools as do his children. Camila graduated from Edgewood and now attends Marquette University. Bennett attends Edgewood and Claire will be graduating from St. Maria Goretti this spring and attending Edgewood in the fall.

Jan Noll ~ Kindergarten
This is my 27th year at St. Francis and 34th year of teaching overall. Prior to joining St. Francis I taught 3rd grade at Sacred Hearts in Sun Prairie, and 2nd grade at St. Joseph's in Ft. Atkinson.
I received my Bachelor's degree from UW - Oshkosh in Elem Ed. with an emphasis in Reading.
Mrs. Noll lives in Cross Plains with her husband Tim. She loves spending time with her children and grandkids.

What I love about teaching is the eagerness that Kindergartners have for learning. They are so excited when they learn something new. I love it when they say "I can't wait to tell my Mom/Dad about this!

Jill Mrochek ~ 1st Grade
Mrs. Mrochek earned her teaching degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. After graduation she taught fourth grade in Houston, Texas. She also previously worked as a substitute for Madison Public Schools. She began teaching first grade at St. Francis Xavier in 1993. Jill and her husband Brian are parish members of St Francis Church and their three children attend St Francis School. She enjoys working with the wonderful supportive SFX School families.

Laura Curwick ~ 4th Grade
This is my 2nd year teaching at Saint Francis. Many of you know me as Ms. Martig from last year. I received my undergraduate degree from UW-Milwaukee and I received my Autism Specialist Certificate from UW-Whitewater’s Graduate Studies program. Currently, I reside in the town of Westport, where I live with my husband and our dog, Chloe. During my free time I spend a great deal of time remodeling and fixing our home, as well as spending time with my family. I also enjoy fishing, playing volleyball and being outdoors!

Natalie O'Connell ~ Middle School Math - 5th Grade Homeroom
This is Mrs. O'Connell's 5th year teaching at SFX. She will be joined the Middle School last year teaching Math and 5th grade Religion. Prior to that she taught 3rd grade for 3 years at SFX. She received her degree from Winona State University. Mrs. O'Connell grew up in Middleton. When she is not teaching she enjoys playing softball, volleyball and basketball. She also enjoys spending time with her husband and pug Dublin.

Mary Kay Hillebrand ~ Middle School Science - 7th Grade Homeroom
Ms Hillebrand has taught at St. Francis Xavier since 1997. She received her BA from Edgewood College in 1996. She majored in Elementary/ Middle School Education, with a minor in Science Education. She earned her Masters in Education from Viterbo College in 2003.

Ms Hillebrand is a 3rd generation graduate of St Francis Xavier School, her daughter Jessica is also a graduate of this school.

Steve Castrogiovanni ~ Middle School Social Studies - 8th Grade Homeroom
This is Mr.C's 4th year teaching at St. Francis and my 9th year in catholic schools. I have been teaching for 12 years. I recieved my B. A. in Elementary Education from National -Louis University in Evanston, IL.
I am excited to be teaching middle school Social Studies and 8th grade religion.
I am currently working towards my masters degree at Cardinal Stritch University and will comlete my program in October of 2011.

Laurel Sauer ~ Art Specialist
Mrs. Sauer has been with St. Francis for 5 years teaching art. I have been teaching for 25 years for different school districts, home schooled children in my home studio and evening classes in stained glass for adults also in my home studio.
I went to University Minnesota, Duluth for my BFA and BAA degrees.
I am teaching K - 8 classes at St. Francis.

Cathy Ogren ~ Library
This is Mrs. Ogren’s fifth year as librarian at St. Francis Xavier School. She has been in education for many years, teaching at the elementary school level in Illinois, Wisconsin, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

She is also the author of two early chapter books and numerous magazine articles for parents, educators, and children. Mrs. Ogren writes a blog, Humor Me: A Mix of Life, Laughter, and Literature, which can be found on her web site: http://www.cathystefanecogren.com .

Mrs. Ogren enjoys teaching her students how to use the library and seeing the excitement on their faces when she introduces a new book.

Lisa Kjentvet ~ Music
This is Lisa Kjentvet’s first year as the music teacher at St. Francis Xavier. Mrs. Kjentvet is in her tenth season as a choral conductor with the Madison Youth Choirs. In addition, she conducts the Resurrection Choir at St. Maria Goretti Parish and is active as a clinician, performer and private piano and voice instructor.

A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in General and Choral Music Education, she previously taught in the Kettle Moraine School District and the Madison Metropolitan School District. She lives in Madison with her husband John and is the busy mom of three boys who attend school at Glacier Creek Middle School and Sunset Ridge Elementary School in Middleton

Julie Runyon ~ Physical Education
January of this year, 2010, began Ms Runyon's 32nd year here at St. Francis Xavier.
Ms. Runyon also teaches at St. John the Evangelist in Spring Green and is in her 21st year
there. She has also taught at St. Maria Goretti in Madison and St. Michael's in Dane.
Ms. Runyon received her Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education from Illinois State
University. She coaches the St. Francis Track team with Cindy Bremser.
Ms. Runyon lives in Madison and spends her free time riding her horse, walking her
dog, and participating in, and watching many sports.
"I really enjoy watching our students change and grow physically, mentally,
emotionally, and spiritually over the 8 years I have them in class."



Carol Phelps ~ Reading & Math Specialist
This is Mrs. Phelp's fifth year as our reading and math specialist. Mrs. Phelps received her bachelor’s degree at the University of California, San Diego, and earned teaching credentials in elementary education and mathematics at San Diego State University.

She has worked in education in many ways over the past 30 years: as a classroom teacher, substitute teacher, and private tutor. Mostly she helps children with reading and math, but over the years she has taught a wide variety of subjects to everyone from preschoolers to adults. She has created summer and afterschool classes for children in German, art, and science, and she has also taught English as a second language. For many years she taught Sunday school and led church programs for children. She has also been a Girl Scout leader, and worked with at-risk teenagers in a restorative justice program.

Mrs. Phelps lives in Middleton with her husband Andy. They have two daughters and two Springer Spaniels. She loves to travel, camp, ski, train dogs, read, draw, paint, photograph, and sculpt in her free time. One of her greatest passions in life is teaching, and every school day she looks forward to coming in to school to enjoy being with our children and exploring the wonders of learning with them.

Jim Beall ~ Technology Coordinator
This is Mr. Beall's ninth year at St. Francis Xavier. He currently teaches computer classes to students in Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. Besides teaching, his duties at school include computer network support and the school website.
Mr. Beall also is the coordinator of the boys volleyball program at St. Francis as well as the head coach of the 5/6 grade boys team. He also enjoys helping coach the 5th grade girls team in the fall.
