THE MINISTRY
OF SACRISTAN
Before Mass
- Check
your name off on the Sacristan Schedule located on the brick wall next
to the refrigerator in the sacristy.
- Check to see that
the microphone and lights are on in Church.
- Place the Sacramentary
and presider’s black folder on a small stand near the servers’ pew,
which is the first pew located on the right-hand side of church facing
the side of the sanctuary.
- Make sure that the
altar cloth and a corporal are on the altar in their proper places before
Mass begins.
- Communion is served
under both species at all weekend liturgies.
- If not indicated
on sheet on counter in sacristy, check with the Director of Worship
to find out how many hosts should be divided between the gold Communion
bowls for Mass.
- Place three of the
filled gold Communion bowls, the chalice, the four Communion cups
(each about 1/3 filled with wine) with purificators, the water cruet,
and the glass dish and cloth for the presider to wash his hands on the
credence table located to the right of the tabernacle in the sanctuary.
A picture of where these items are to be placed is located both in the
sacristy and on the credence table.
- Put one large host
on top of the other hosts in the one remaining filled gold Communion
bowl and place this bowl, along with a cruet filled with wine on the
Gifts Table located along the back wall in church. The ushers
will move it to the center aisle after the entrance procession.
- Unlock the tabernacle
and leave the key in the keyhole. **On Sunday, the key can
be left in the tabernacle until after the 10:30am Mass.
After Mass
- The servers will
remove all of the Communion bowls, the chalice, the Communion cups,
the water and wine cruets, and the soiled linens from the credence table,
and take them into the Sacristy. The sacristan needs to then place
the water and wine cruets in the refrigerator and the soiled linens
in a container under the sink.
- Before washing the
Communion vessels, fill each cup with a little bit of water and drink
this mixture of the Precious Blood and water, so as to make sure that
all of the Precious Blood has been consumed. Likewise, pour some
water in each Communion bowl, swish it around in order to dislodge any
Consecrated Host particles that may have stuck to the bowls, pour the
water from the bowls collectively into a cup, and consume the remaining
Consecrated Host particles and water. Then pour some water into
each one of the Communion vessels and empty them into the sacrorium
(the sink with the cover) in order to make sure that no remains
of the Consecrated Hosts or Precious Blood are still in the bowls and
cups. After the Communion vessels have been purified, the bowls
can be rinsed out with water and the rims of the cups can be washed
with a small amount of soap and dried in preparation for the next Mass.
- After the 5:00pm
and 8:30am Masses, count the number of hosts remaining in the tabernacle
and write the amount down on a sheet of paper located on the counter
on the right-hand side of the sink in the sacristy.
- After the 5:00pm
and 10:30am Masses, remove the key from the tabernacle and place it
on the counter on the right hand side of the sink in the sacristy.
- Turn off the microphone
and the lights.
